What Your Job Will Be Like:
Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) is seeking a R&D S&E Manager to lead the Power Sources R&D Department (7446). 7446 has broad portfolio that underpins all of Power Sources product research, development, production and surveillance of our ND and other internal products. It is responsible for exploring and understanding the fundamentals of battery performance and reliability through materials aging and understanding of performance vs design element of our battery technologies. It is also active as hands-on lab research capability in the realm of cutting-edge battery research within Sandia and has representation across the broader Department of Energy battery community.
Finally, this department is tasked with understanding and furthering research of battery safety and degradation mechanisms through our Battery Abuse Facility. This work includes fostering relationships within Sandia’s internal battery community (1800 and 8800) as well as in the academic, commercial, federal and state government, and international entities who work in overlapping technical areas.
As the manager of 7446, on any given day you can expect to:
- Coordinate with our internal battery community to support and promote Sandia’s energy portfolio
- Field requests from external entities regarding Sandia support of proposals or work while maintaining our standing as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC)
- Support internal PSTG work through fundamental research, material evaluations, or new product innovation
- Foster R&D talent through supporting proposals, networking with potential partners, and representing PSTG’s work to external entities
- Review and authorize work related to electrochemical energy storage experimentation as well as battery abuse operations
- Collaborate with other managers within 7440 to further PSTG’s strategic plan
- Coach staff through program execution for a wide number of customer types across all Sandia Mission Areas
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.
Salary Range:
$157,100 - $267,000
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- An active Q clearance or equivalent is required
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal Manager, R&D Science and Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
- A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
- Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- A PhD in a relevant science or engineering field
- Expertise in current state of the art electrochemical energy storage research
- A track record of performance in a research environment, including writing proposals and managing research projects
- Strong network within the battery community internal and external to Sandia
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience with safe and secure operations in hazardous environments.
- Knowledge of the nuclear deterrence (ND) mission
- Ability to manage information security of classified, proprietary, and export-controlled information.
- About Our Team:
The Power Sources Technology Group, 7440, utilizes the latest scientific and engineering technologies to perform research, design, development and production of power sources used for NNSA, DoD, DOE, NASA and commercial applications. A key role of this organization is to advance power source technologies to meet both current and future energy needs. The Power Sources Technologies Group provides cradle-to-grave research, engineering design/development and production of thermal batteries, thermoelectrics, lithium primary and secondary batteries, novel battery chemistries, component and materials surveillance, as well as battery abuse testing research. Power source technology is a growth area both within the Nuclear Weapons PMU and the Energy, Climate and Infrastructure Security (ECIS) PMU.
Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
