What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D Systems Engineer for Department 02377 for the W87-1 Systems Mechanical Design Team. We are seeking a self-directed, customer- and partner-focused individual who has strong interpersonal, teaming, leadership, and analytical skills to become the Mechanical Lead for the W87-1 Systems team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Resolve technical and programmatic design, development, qualification, and production challenges in a collaborative manner across multiple internal and external agencies.
  • Demonstrate technical leadership in identifying and managing technical risks.
  • Analyze system performance against requirements.
  • Mentor early career engineers.
  • Assess, plan, and report progress relative to a program plan.
  • Work with engineers, technologists, and technicians from multiple Sandia National Labs (SNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Pantex (PX), and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) organizations to solve technical challenges.
  • Update design definition and documentation.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Livermore, CA. Some travel is required for this position.

Salary Range:

$135,700 - $270,900

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Prior Mechanical Lead or team leadership experience.
  • Experience working on a nuclear weapon system or component organization.
  • Demonstrated self-motivated effectiveness working in an environment with dynamic conditions, competing priorities, and firm deadlines.
  • A demonstrated ability to integrate, build, and work effectively across technical teams, collaborate with customers and partners to resolve issues, and conduct trade-offs to identify system solutions.
  • An understanding of nuclear weapon design.
  • Experience in test equipment engineering.
  • Experience with data and failure analysis.
  • Experience writing Engineering Authorizations.
  • Experience with DOD or DOE programs.

About Our Team:

The W87-1 warhead is a modernization program intended to replace the currently fielded W78 warhead on the Air Force's new Sentinel, missile system by 2030. The W87-1 team is at the forefront of a program to design the W87-1 in response to the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review (NPR). We partner with the US Air Force program offices, NNSA Federal Program Office, across the system integration team, with multiple component organizations, test facilities, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and across the Nuclear Security Enterprise

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
